Further out towards Berry Hill and Forest Town, you get more 1950s and 60s semis, built to a slightly more generous footprint but often with kitchens still tucked into the original small rear extension rather than opened up to the rest of the ground floor. Knocking through to create an open-plan kitchen-diner is one of the most common jobs we take on across both types of property, and it usually means dealing with a chimney breast or a supporting wall that wasn't designed with that layout in mind when the house was built.

Common builder problems in Mansfield

Older Mansfield terraces often have solid, uneven concrete floors and load-bearing chimney breasts that complicate any open-plan kitchen plan, meaning the cost of a steel beam or RSJ needs factoring in from the start rather than as a surprise once we've opened the wall up.
